Strength Training Improves Heart Health, From The June 2015 Harvard Heart Letter

June 13, 2015

Add strength training to your fitness plan Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 11, 2015 Aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, biking, and swimming, is good for the heart. Strength training, also known as weight training or resistance training, also has cardiovascular benefits, reports the June 2015 Harvard Heart Letter. "Strength training maintains and may even increase muscle mass, which people tend to lose as they age," says Dr. Rania Mekary, a visiting assistant professor of surgery at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital and assistant professor at MCPHS University. Increased muscle mass has a trickle-down effect that benefits blood vessels and the heart. Boosting muscle mass speeds up metabolism, which helps people burn more calories, even at rest. A faster metabolism also helps prevent weight gain, which puts extra strain on the heart. Strength training seems to be especially go!! important for keeping off belly fat. This so-called visceral fat, which surrounds the internal organs, is particularly dangerous. Mekary and colleagues at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that healthy men who did weight training for 20 minutes a day had less of an age-related increase in abdominal fat compared with men who spent the same amount of time doing aerobic exercise. Strength training can help control blood sugar levels by drawing glucose from the bloodstream to power muscles.

Are You World Cup Fit? | Mr. Fit | With Mark A. Cinelli | Boston Herald

June 7, 2015

Cinelli Mr. Fit with Mark A. Cinelli Are You World Cup Fit? Thursday, June 4, 2015 Mark Cinelli The 2015 FIFA Womens World Cup soccer tournament in slated to start in 2 days. We are talking about high quality soccer, close matches, and unexpected upsets that will make for great theater. The one constant as you watch these matches is level of fitness of the players. Professional soccer athletes train all year round for these types of matches, situations, and moments of glory. Combining soccer skills, field vision, and game IQ with heart, drive, desire, and dedication gives you a world class competitor. Yet, to really succeed, all players on the team have to be committed to fitness. In a typical 11 v. 11 game, a soccer player runs approximately 6 miles. While that may seem like a lot, make the calculationfor 90 minutes, six miles equates to one mile every 15 minutes the pace of good power walker or a slow jogger. Not particularly impressive. Soccer players, though, are not running at a slow and steady pace for 90 minutes. They are stopping and starting. They are sprinting, back-pedaling, and shielding. They are cutting and jumping. Professional Soccer is made up of precise, complex, and intense movements. Once an athlete has developed the movement skill base necessary to execute those explosive and multi-directional drills efficiently and front page effectively, they can then develop the energy and conditioning systems needed to sustain total athleticism for a full game. Plenty of injuries occur as athletes are pushed to their conditioning limits during the final minutes of a game. Not only does fatigue increase the risk of injury, it also is a major factor in the loss of concentration and reaction time. Games are won or lost with a lack of overall fitness. Poor conditioning affects an athletes decision-making as well as their ability to execute those intense and precise explosive multi-directional movements. Aerobic fitness is important for any endurance activity and is essential to help establish a baseline of fitness as well as aide in recovery between intense bouts of exercises/drills. To truly be on the top of their game, though, an athlete must be able to build, power, speed, strength, quickness and agility. Anaerobic training is the only way to push the body to achieve these qualities. Moderate paced activity performed in a continuous manner, such as jogging, will train the athlete to be one thing - slow. Athletes of all types need to train multi-directionally with unpredictable drills and explosively with high-intensive intervals. These drills will maximize metabolic output and caloric expenditure and help to stimulate the development of lean tissue, assist with body fat reduction, as well as increase fitness levels. By training the anaerobic system athletes will develop the number, size and efficiency of fast twitch muscle fibers. Neuromuscular activation and coordination of movement skills will also increase. As muscles and joints continue to adapt to these structural changes, athletes will start to see improvement in their sports performance. In addition, anaerobic training prepares joints and connective tissue for the explosive drills and multi-directional movements to help reduce the risk of incurring an injury. Training athletes with sport specific fitness and endurance promotes ongoing development of movement skills and motor patterns. It also results in better performance while under fatigue and stress. Many competitive sports outcomes are determined in the final minutes of a game. I am a firm believer that the fittest team will win the majority of those outcomes.

Health Matters: Screening Detects Common Circulatory Disease |

Often lifestyle changes and medications are enough to treat PAD, but if the condition is severe and affecting your ability to work or perform regular activities, surgery may be an option. There are two main types of surgical ways to lose weight procedures to treat PAD: Endovascular. More than 90 percent of patients who undergo surgery for PAD have an endovascular approach to treatment. This minimally invasive form of therapy requires no incisions, can be done under local anesthesia and usually patients leave the hospital within 24 hours of surgery. There are several different modalities of endovascular therapy including angioplasty, stenting and atherectomy. Atherectomy, however, has largely replaced angioplasty as the primary mode of therapy for blocked arteries. Atherectomy devices are unique in that they can actually cut the plaque out of the artery. The device shaves long segments of plaque and stores it in the nose cone of the device until the procedure is completed. This eliminates the need to leave behind stents (which are permanent). Open Vascular Surgery. In the cases where endovascular interventions fail, open surgery remains an option. In this setting, bypass procedures are performed where a vein from another part of the body or a plastic tube is used to go around the blocked artery and re-establish blood flow to the lower part of the leg. While bypass grafting involves incisions and general anesthesia, results are good and can last a lifetime.

For $2,500, This 1981 Chevy Citation X-11 Is A Rare Moving Citation

May 21, 2015

For $2,500, This 1981 Chevy Citation X-11 Is A Rare Moving Citation For the builder/seller of this X-11, that just wasnt nice enough. Out came the Little Engine That Could V6, and in its place was dropped a Caddy 4.9 crate motor. Thats the L26 which, when hauling blue-hairs around, was good for 200-bhp at 4100 rpm, and 275 lb-ft of torque at some other rpm I cant be bothered to look up. Those 65 extra ponies dont come at a significant weight penalty as the aluminum Caddy mill tips the scales about the same as the iron block 2.8 V6. The bell housing bolt pattern for the Muncie 4-speed is the same for both to so the matchup is pretty dirt simple too. Getting all the gauges to work might not be as simple, but the seller has bypassed that issue by going the VDO route. Heres a video that shows those bad boys working it, as well as a taste for what the fat-cat dual exhaust-equipped engine sounds like. The seller says the car goes like a bat out of hell and that much of the remaining mechanicals were upgraded or updated at the time of the engine switch, which was about 12K ago. Thats plenty of time for anything that could go wrong related to the switch to go wrong. Its also plenty of time to clean up the body - find a new pair of plastic rear bumper snoods, and fix whatever rust issues it may have - but none of that seems to have been a priority. The interior looks like it would be okay if you do a lot of night driving, while the ad notes that the exterior needs some love from a good rust and paint expert.

a sort of ghost meal, making it possible to facilitate the weight-loss-friendly half of the digestive process. A study published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine reported successful trials of a drug called fexaramine in obese mice. The rodents treated with the drug stopped gaining weight and were also found to have reduced cholesterol and body fat. This pill is like an imaginary meal, Ronald Evans, a coauthor of the paper and the director of the gene expression laboratory at Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif., told The Guardian .
